A few days in Tokyo and Kyoto gave a glimpse of both modern and historical cities. Much of Tokyo was destroyed by bombing in WW II and has been rebuilt as a modern city with cutting edge fashion and architectural design. Its thirteen million residents give it a very congested feel. Kyoto was spared from bombing and is Japan's most historically significant city. It's a good walking city so we spent our time visiting well preserved temples and shrines and exploring back streets in neighborhoods including the Geisha district of Kyoto.
