Hinduism is the most popular religion in Nepal followed by Buddhism but the country is very open and accepting of all faiths. Boudanath is the center for Tibetan Buddhism and has one of the largest stupas (religious temples) in the world. It was originally built sometime after AD 600. Local residents, as well as visitors, circumambulate the stupa and spin prayer wheels. Religious observances go on day and night. We coached monks in spoken English at a monastery nearby, one class of boys 7-13 years and one class 14-20 years of age. Both classes were in late afternoon so it became a challenge to teach by lantern light when the lights regularly went out because of country-wide electricity rationing.
