Outside the metropolitan center of Siem Reap people mostly live on rice fields and along waterways. Homes are built on stilts to survive flooding. When the monsoon rains come the land turns to mud and the only access may be by boat for nearly six months. In the dry season everything is covered by dust. Dams built by China for hydroelectric power have lowered water levels in the dry season adding to the difficulties of life.
