Vienna is called the musical city. Mozart, Beethoven, Mahler and Strauss lived here and it is home to the renowned Vienna State Opera. Standing room tickets are sold on day of performance for less than $10. These provide some of the best “seats” in the house, directly under the Emperor’s box. Performances can be watched outside on a big screen for free. Just wandering the city on foot is a special treat but it’s hard not to overdo the coffee, pastries, and gelato.
Photos in this gallery show inside the opera house, backstage, and outside at night. Also, a photo of Beethoven’s piano in his apartment, and photos of butterflies inside the Imperial Butterfly House.
